Pinterest Strategies for Businesses

I could probably write a thousand blog posts on different Pinterest strategies but today we’re going to walk through some of the basics! If you’re still wondering if your business should even be on Pinterest, be sure and read this post that covers when it’s effective to market on Pinterest.

Once you’ve established you need to get your brand up on the platform, here are a few actionable items to grow your traffic using Pinterest.

Research Keywords in your Niche

The first thing we do over here at Love Digital Design when onboarding a new Pinterest client is create a spreadsheet with short tail keywords and long tail keywords. Otherwise known as primary and secondary keywords. Here’s an example using Dinner Recipes as our primary keyword (great for food bloggers, dietitians, family blogs, etc).

Dinner Recipes

Dinner Recipes for Family

Dinner Recipes for Two

Healthy Dinner Recipes

Fast and Easy Dinner Recipes

…and the list goes on!

Once we have a nice spreadsheet full of niche specific keywords, we start building our boards. Use these keywords to generate your board titles and board descriptions. Do not skip your board descriptions! You’re also going to want to use these keywords in your pin descriptions so keep it handy.

If the thought of generating a spreadsheet like this overwhelms you – we offer Pinterest keyword spreadsheets as an a la carte offering! Reach out to us to invest in one.

Create Visually Appealing Pins

Okay I think this one is a little obvious but there are a few things to look for when designing pins. Using high quality images and relevant photos will help generate clicks to your site from Pinterest. Utilizing templates will also save you an enormous amount of time and energy. There are plenty of free ones out there, but you can also take it up a notch and invest in a custom pack for your brand. Pinterest will also actually scan and read your pin for keywords so including those as a text overlay in bold, plain text can be an effective Pinterest strategy.

Use the Pinterest Scheduling Tool

Pinterest is a marathon not a sprint, and Pinterest wants to see you are a consistent user over a long period of time. But who has time to log in every single day to Pin? Not this girl. While Tailwind can be a great resource, we’ve found the in-platform scheduling feature is just as effective. Our suggestion is to batch create pins and choose one day of the week to spend 1-2 hours scheduling out Pins. That way you’ve got a consistent, steady flow of pins being published without having to login in all the time.

Follow and Study your Competitors Accounts

Listen we are not about to encourage any type of copying from other creators (not cool!) but it can be valuable and totally fine to look to others for inspiration. Finding other larger, successful Pinterest accounts within your same niche can be helpful to see what is working for them. Are they posting a lot of traditional size Pin images, or do they mix it up? What types of boards do they have? How often do they pin? What do some of their pin descriptions look like? All of these can be great questions to ask to find new pin methods to try.

It’s always important to remember that Pinterest is a long-term strategy so do not expect overnight results. Eventually, your efforts will pay off and your website traffic will increase thanks to your new best friend – Pinterest!
